Breakfast Around The World: Some People Like A Sweet Breakfast!

June 13, 2018

When it comes to breakfast, there are no rules. While you love your cereal, your spouse likes fava beans and your best friend swears by shakshuka. In some countries, almost anything goes nowadays – but one thing remains sure. While some like it savory, others prefer a sweet start to the day. Read on to find out more.

Starting The Day On A Sweet Note

Where would the French be without their croissants and baguette, served with butter and fruits jam? However, in many countries people tend to start their day with something savory rather than sweet. And in others, such as the USA and Britain, people prefer to not choose! Pancakes , muffins, marmalade and cornflakes can often be found happily served next to scrambled eggs or beans! Just like the Americans and British, the Arab table presents a large variety of mixed flavors. You can prepare shakshouka in a non-stick pan and maasoub in a small saucepan then serve them next to a sweet beehive bun.

The southern European countries, on the other hand, seem more sweet than savory if their breakfasts are to be believed – bread rolls, jam, fruit and filled croissants are served with coffee. Across most of Africa, people start the day with a piece of fruit and different kinds of porridge depending on the country. And if pancakes are your thing, you can try the Moroccan version called Baghrir which is drizzled with olive oil, or the Swedish variation where they’re called Pannkakor and are traditionally eaten with jam or marmalade.

There are a lot of ideas for delicious yet balanced breakfasts to see you through the year. Try out some of the other countries’ specialties, and you’ll never get bored!
